DESTINATION BULNES FORT AND PUERTO DEL HAMBRE

If you want to discover how the history of the Magallanes region was forged, you must visit Fort Bulnes, a historical reconstruction that revives the place where the first Patagonian town was established that took possession of the strait and surrounding lands in 1843. The Fort rises at kilometer 60 of Route 9 South, at an elevation of Punta Santa Ana and on the coast, you can see remains of old ships that have been shipwrecked.

The road on the far left leads to Puerto del Hambre, 2 km from the fort. “Puerto del Hambre” is on the banks of the coast of “Bahía Mansa” (Mansa Bay), in whose place Captain Sarmiento de Gamboa founded the city of Rey Don Felipe, in March 1584. This attempt at Spanish colonization had a tragic end as its inhabitants perished from starvation. Years later, the English corsair Thomas Cavendish stood at the place and when he found only the remains of the former colony, he renamed the place with the name “Port Famine”, which in Spanish means Puerto del Hambre, name that remains until today.

TIPS

You must consider that even though stores are opened all day, some stores in rural locations take a break for lunch between 1:00 and 3:00 PM.

We also recommend bringing Chilean pesos, most of all for buying basic needs. Some stores accept credit and debit cards but it is not common in all of them.

If you are traveling by yourself, do not worry. Most of the hostels have common areas and it will be very easy to know people from all over the world.

Before your trip, you must have in mind the clothing that you’re going to pack because Patagonia is very cold and extremely windy, warm clothes are fundamental.
