DESTINATION SENO ALMIRANTAZGO

The “Almirantazgo” sound has the peculiarity of being the first marine protected area in Tierra del Fuego in 2018. This Marine area has 76.400 hectares. It is limited by two continental parks: the Karukinka private park on its north coast and the Alberto de Agostini National Park on its south coast. It has been declared a Biosphere Heritage thanks to its particular orography of the Falla de Fagnano – Magallanes, which makes the Darwin Mountain Range cross the entire Tierra del Fuego.

In the place, there are 14 glaciers and multiple bays, with mountains that fall directly into the sea, a prodigal area in native forests with species of Nothofagus such as lenga, coigüe, and ñirre tress. In addition, the sound is one of the largest wildlife reserves, home to leopard seals and black-browed albatrosses, where there was also a small reproductive group of marine elephants, unique in the continental sector of Chile.

THE SENO ALMIRANTAZGO CONSTITUTES A GREAT FIORD. IT IS HIGHLIGHTED BY THE PRESENCE OF A REPRODUCTIVE COLONY OF THE BLACK EYEBROW ALBATROS LOCATED IN INNER WATERS, WHICH BECOMES IT UNIQUE IN THE WORLD.

TIPS

We also recommend bringing Chilean pesos, most of all for buying basic needs. Some stores accept credit and debit cards but it is not common in all of them.

Always follow the instructions of park rangers so you may enjoy your trip: do not use fire in unauthorized places and do not go out from demarked trails to avoid accidents.

Before your trip, you must have in mind the clothing that you’re going to pack because Patagonia is very cold and extremely windy, warm clothes are fundamental.

Patagonia is an area of constant wind, especially during spring-summer; it can reach an average speed of 30 to 40 km / hr.
