Puerto Williams is the capital of the Chilean Antarctic territory and strategic point for shipping traffic that moves between the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans.
The town also functions as a platform for Chilean actions in the Antarctic territory, given its proximity to the white continent.
During centuries was habitat of the most austral people of the world: the yaganes or yamanas, who, in their canoes of bark, transited through the channel labyrinths. More than 7 thousand years ago, they frequented the north arm of the beagle channel and they were distributed through the costs of the Navarino island.
According to studies carried out by archaeologists and scientists, they descend from nomads collecting hunters who would have arrived in this sector 6,500 years ago.
