Magallanes Region is well known by its unique culture linked to country life in the “Estancias Patagónicas” which are cattle ranges.

The name Estancia comes from the English word Station as almost 100 years ago an English Company owed almost the whole land, so to manage this huge land, they stablished stations, then the word was Chileanized and became the Estancia.

The Estancias usually have a sheep shearing shed, workers houses, the main house for the owner, a common dining room “Comedor” for the workers, etc

Most of the Estancias are still working in hands of local families and some have started in tourism activities along with the cattle manage.  So you will find in every province of the region, Estancias where you can stay in beautiful refurbished places that became in pretty like boutique hotels.

Visiting an Estancia is the best way to get to know the Magellanic Culture by horseback riding the pampas with a baqueano (Patagonian cowboy), watching the sheep shearing, sheep herding (when in season) and tasting the best lamb you will ever taste, the Patagonian Lamb barbecue.

You will find exceptional options in Tierra del Fuego Island, in Sierra Baguales (near Torres del Paine National Park), Peninsula Antonio Varas (in front of Puerto Natales), nearby Punta Arenas and in Cerro Castillo surroundings (a beautiful little village located 54 km north east Puerto Natales).

TIPS

Always follow the instructions of park rangers so you may enjoy your trip: do not use fire in unauthorized places and do not go out from demarked trails to avoid accidents.

In an emergency case, to contact Chilean police (Carabineros de Chile) you must dial 133 from every fixed phone and/or mobile phone.

To arrive to Torres del Paine, you must take a transfer or ask for the buses that go to Puerto Natales (at the north of Punta Arenas). From there, you will find lots of tourist services that will take you to Torres.

Before your trip, you must have in mind the clothing that you’re going to pack because Patagonia is very cold and extremely windy, warm clothes are fundamental.
