Whales are the largest mammals on Earth. But the only way to understand its magnitude is to have it there, in front of our own eyes, when breathing stops for a few seconds and the heart starts beating faster. Each year at the end of the year and the beginning of the next, the whales leave the warm waters of Central America to swim to the Antarctic in search of food, which is why Chile is one of the countries with the greatest sighting of these cetaceans in this part of the world.
Francisco Coloane Marine Park, which is about 7 hours from Punta Arenas, is perhaps the best place to see whales in all of Chile. Humpback whales abound in this park, which can be observed between November and March, and other cetaceans that find their first source of food in the area. Apart from this species, in this place you can see Minke and Orcas.
The end of the whale’s route is in Antarctica, where the largest number of species of this mammal come together: minke, blue, sei, and humpback. The greatest sightings occur between January and May, when the whales, already satisfied with food, prepare to travel north to reproduce.
Always use official transport and ask for arrival and departure times in the designated area.
Always follow the instructions of park rangers so you may enjoy your trip: do not use fire in unauthorized places and do not go out from demarked trails to avoid accidents.
Before your trip, you must have in mind the clothing that you’re going to pack because Patagonia is very cold and extremely windy, warm clothes are fundamental.
You must bring a heavy jacket (hopefully with newborn lamb skin), waterproof pants, wool caps, a fleece and thermal gloves, windbreaker, trekking shoes, comfortable shoes for resting, boots, sunglasses and sunscreen. Do not forget t-shirts and lightweight shoes for sunny days, the best thing you can do is to wear layers of clothing.
