Pio XI Glacier
This glacier is born in the Southern Field of Ice. It’s the biggest of South America; it has 64 km long if it is measured from its tongue in the Eyre Fiord. According to the last measurement it has 1265 square meters, the same as the Metropolitan Region in Chile. It is located in the Bernardo O’Higgins National Park in the north limit of the Última Esperanza Province.
This big moving mass of snow has several front sides, one of them face to the Pacific Ocean, a bigger one to the north, and several other smaller branches. This glacier differs from others because of its change in color, from bluish to white, which is better seen when there are falls, every 5 to 10 minutes, followed by big waves.
How to get there: From Puerto Natales, the only access is by sea. To visit this spot you can book a charter as there are no regular tours. You have to book them in advance in the agencies that offer this private navigation.
