Located in the extreme south of America, approximately from parallel 52º south. Its borders are the Magellan Strait by the north, the Beagle channel by the south, the Atlantic Ocean by the east and the Pacific Ocean by the west. This gigantic island is shared by Chile and Argentina, countries that own the western and the eastern side, respectively.
The name of the island comes from the vision that had the first sailors who explored its coasts. From their ships they saw surprising and constant blazes, with which the aborigines protected themselves against cold. Onas and Yamanas did not wear much clothing in spite of the harsh climate. Only the fire and their special metabolism (corporal temperature one degree superior to ours) kept them warm. They carried fire even in their canoes, made of lenga bark, which they used to fishing and hunting sea mammals.
The capital city of Tierra del Fuego is Porvenir.
